Bio

Dr Nieuwenhout is assistant professor of energy law at the Groningen Centre of Energy Law and Sustainability. She has two main focus areas: the connection of offshore wind and development of HVDC grids, and the energy transition in the built environment through positive energy districts (PEDs). She teaches competition law and state aid law in the energy sector at the University of Groningen. Next to her scientific career, she is also a city council elected representative for GroenLinks.

    As an assistant professor in energy law, I teach courses in the LLM programme (energy market law, competition and state aid), I supervise master theses and student interns. In terms of research, I am involved in several Horizon Europe research programmes, POCITYF (on positive energy districts), READY4DC and InterOPERA (both on the deployment of HVDC grids).     As a city council member, I represent the Green party (GroenLinks). My topics of expertise are energy policy, climate policy, climate adaptation and water policy. I am also a chair of committee debates of the city council. This is my second term.
